Pitt Grad ID'd As Woman Killed By Shark In Bahamas

Bahamian officials have identified the Boston woman who was killed on Monday, Dec. 4, by a shark while she was paddleboarding off the coast of a five-star resort.

Lauren Erickson Van Wart, age 44, was killed while playing in the ocean with a family member, the Royal Bahamas Police Force announced on Tuesday, Dec. 5. 

RBPF Spokesperson Sergeant Desiree Ferguson said in a news conference the couple were about a mile from the five-star Sandals Royal Bahamian Resort when she was attacked.

Erickson Van Wart suffered "serious injuries to the right side of her body, including the rip hip region and also her right upper limb," Ferguson said. 

Lifeguards attempted to perform CPR once they got her back to the beach, but she could not be resuscitated. 

Van Wart, a 2002 University of Pittsburgh graduate, worked at Curriculum Associates, an education material company in Billerica, according to her LinkedIn

Rob Waldron, CEO of Curriculum Associates, said she was a beloved member of the team, and her death leaves a large hole in their community.

Authorities did not say what kind of shark attacked her. Officials are still investigating the incident.
